The classic Klingon cruiser, the D7 is a stalwart defender of the empire and the basis for one of the most long lived cruiser lineages in Star Trek history. A worthy if aging opponent, the D7 was the counterpoint to the Federation Constitution-class vessels. The D7 cruiser model was an effective design with very balanced weapons abilities, though their shielding systems were less powerful than those used by the Federation. Despite some minor flaws the D7 flourished and its effectiveness was noted by other powers, most notably the Romulan Star Empire that traded cloaking technology in exchange for blueprints of the D7 cruiser for their own use (in addition to advanced warp enginery).

Balancing this ship and remaining with breathing room for the K'T'Inga upgrade was difficult. I wanted the two ships to be different enough to represent an upgrade in quality without making the K'T'inga too strong. Also, this ship was the first Klingon to poise the dilemma of what to do about the obviously different photon torpedo launcher. First I thought about putting two photorps on, but I rejected that. Roman Alexander Perner (a great help throughout my designs) mounted ion torpedoes on his versions, but I didn't care for this fix either. I ultimately decided on the heavy photon torpedo.
